Jane Austen – My favorite author

I have been an avid Jane Austen fan since the day I read her second book PRIDE AND PREJUDICE, and watched the different versions in the movies. My favourite is the one made in 2005 played by Keira Knightley as Elizabeth Bennet and Matthew Macfadyen as Mr. Fitzwilliam Darcy.  The other famous version which is considered as the most faithful adaptation of the novel is the BBC TV Mini-Series with Jennifer Ehle, alongside my personal favorite actor – Colin Firth as Mr. Darcy. It maybe is too much but I have seen the movies several times and I even tried to memorise its significant lines as I encountered from the book. I highly recommend that you read the book which is considered as one of the most endearing love stories written in the English language.

I have also seen the filmed adaptation of the other books of Jane Austen namely: Sense and Sensibility and Emma. And during this #stayathome / #stayhome period I have been glad to watch the other movie adaptations of Mansfield Park, Northanger Abbey, Persuasion and many of the documentaries about the life of Jane Austen. She was born on 16th December 1775 in Steventon Rectory, Hampshire, England. Sadly, she died unmarried at the age forty-one on 18th July 1817, which to me is far too early. It seems ironic to say that looking at a person who had such an unsuccessful love-life herself but was able to write  novels that contain love stories that still centuries later are so well loved and adored by millions of people, including me.

I cannot admire enough the wit and character of Jane and I can certainly empathise her desire as a woman who wished to find love rather than marry for convenience or social acceptance. At the same time, she was a person who was independently minded, who preferred intellect over money.

For the hopeless romantics out there, you may consider reading (or watching) Pride and Prejudice which is my number one Jane Austen favourite.

Here is the list of Jane Austen’s novels:

  • Sense and Sensibility (1811)
  • Pride and Prejudice (1813)
  • Mansfield Park (1814)
  • Emma (1816)
  • Northanger Abbey (1803)
  • Persuasion (1817)

There are many movie adaptations available. Most of them can be easily accessed and available to watch on YouTube. I hope you enjoy as much as I do.
