The Rose City: Petra Jordan
Petra, also known as the Lost City, is a famous archaeological site located in the southwestern desert in Jordan dating back to around 300 B.C. Famous for its rock-cut monumental buildings; it was the capital of the Nabatean Kingdom. This was once the setting for a thriving Christian community. With churches, tombs and temples carved into the pink sandstone cliffs, earning its nickname, the “Rose City“. A City that is said to be “half as old as time”.
There is another way to explore this magnificent City and that is by hiring a horse that takes you through to the left side of the canyon across the mountain top. This route gives a fantastic view of the entire landscape before descending on foot along narrow steps to the touristy area. Spending extra to hire a horse was a commendable move that saved me time and energy and allowed an opportunity to have a great coverage of this vast area while at the same time giving a feeling of being on top of the world similar to re-enacting the movie Indiana Jones, The Last Crusade. This place also reminded me of the Arabian Nights, The Three Princes story where Prince Hussain travels to the underground city of Petra to find the “flying carpet”.
This man-made phenomenon never fails to astound all visitors who are humbled by its uniqueness.
