The Square of Miracles and the Leaning Tower of Pisa Italy

For tourists, there are so many things to see and discover in this part of the Tuscany Region.

Pisa, is probably well-known for the iconic Leaning Tower, but there’s so many other things to explore especially within the Piazza del Miracoli or  Square of Miracles.

It is amazing to know that there are other equally interesting structures within its vicinity that I only learned during my visit. And that is The Square of Miracles, or Piazza dei Miracoli, that is recognized as one of the finest architectural complexes in the world. The Square existed in early Medieval Times and within its walls of 8.87 hectares is the three main monuments: the Cathedral including the famous bell tower, the Baptistery and the graveyard known as Camposanto (Monumental Cemetery). It is also the site of the New Hospital of the Holy Spirit which houses the Sinopias Museum and the Cathedral Museum.

It is said that it was the most convenient place because within the square all the stages of human life were symbolized from birth (Baptistery), to marriage in the Cathedral). Then there’s the Hospital on the side of the Square and the last stop of the journey is inevitably the Cemetery.

Interestingly, the Camposanto (Monumental Cemetery) is said to have been built around fifty shiploads of sacred soil brought directly from Mount Golgotha in the Holy Land to Pisa after the 4th Crusade of 1202.

Its uniqueness has attracted millions of tourists, sending an echoing message to every visitor to love oneself and to learn to  accept that each one is utterly perfect in its own imperfections.
