Gobustan Day Tour (Mud Volcanoes)

The original plan for the day was to go to Gabala, but for some reason, that trip was canceled. With the recommendation of the Baku City Tours company, I joined the Gobustan group tour instead.

The Gobustan group tour package is a whole-day activity headed by a professional tour guide and includes pick-up and drop-off in shared transportation by air-conditioned minivan, as well as entry tickets to different sites.

For lunch, we were taken to a countryside restaurant that served local cuisine. This part added value to our tour as we had the experience of having our meal with some locals that indicated we were indeed having authentic Azerbaijani food and locally produced drinks at very affordable prices compared to what is served in the city. Although I only ordered a small portion of a dish made of fish, I was able to have a taste of some of the foods that the group decided to share. Out of curiosity, we ordered extra dishes that we found interesting on the menu and as recommended by the waiter.

These are the places and natural landmarks that we visited.

  • Gobustan National Park: Mud volcanoes and Gobustan Rock Art / Cave carvings.
  • Ateshgah – The Fire Temple.
  • Yanardag – The Burning Mountain.
  • Plus, a quick stop at the Heydar Aliyev Cultural Centre.

I must say, I had a wonderful experience taking part in the Gobustan tour which I would not have been able to visit on my own. If I am being honest, I did not expect Azerbaijan has unique landscapes and many interesting historical places to visit. These sites are accessible from the city and you do not need to travel far in case you only want to spend 2-3 days in Baku. Obviously, there are many other things to do. But after taking this tour, I understand why it is one of the highly recommended activities to do when visiting Baku for the first time, especially for those who would want to make the most out of their time in the country.

I hope it gives you an idea of some of the fascinating attractions that lie outside Baku’s city limits and that it may encourage you to also add Azerbaijan to your Travel Bucket List.
